Reclaim the Night is a global women’s protest against men’s sexual violence held, on the last Friday in October each year. The date for 2012 is October 26. The philosophy of Reclaim The Night encourages grass roots participation in the organisation of events by as many women as possible. In this way Reclaim The Night is able to draw together women from diverse backgrounds and experiences to work together in addressing issues of men’s sexual violence against women and children. With the tragic death of Jill Meagher in Melbourne recently, the timing for Reclaim The Night has never been more important. This year’s Reclaim the Night will have a special focus on young women. We would encourage all mothers to [...]

This July Byron Youth Service is celebrating 25 years as the primary provider of youth services in the Byron Shire. Yay! We figure that’s reason enough to put on a few special events and activities to celebrate and acknowledge that “Young People Matter” in our community. As many adults would recall, the teenage years are often a time of great change and turbulence for young people. Not only are their bodies and brains rapidly developing, but their social networks and views of the world are forming also. They are making sense of a rapidly changing and often challenging world. They are thinking about their future and their place in the community – what they might like to ‘do’ or ‘be’ [...]

SLUTWALK IN BYRON BAY TODAY! TODAY… June 23, the streets of Byron Bay will see its first SlutWalk. The main idea of SlutWalk is that it is a protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a woman’s appearance. On January 24th, 2011, a representative of the Toronto Police, during a lecture to college students, gave shocking insight into the Police Force’s view of sexual assault by stating: “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized.” The reaction to this statement has since started a world-wide grassroots movement challenging rape culture, victim-blaming and slut-shaming, and working to end sexual and domestic violence. Over the last 16 months, SlutWalks have taken place in [...]

Police assembled for Police Memorial Day in Lismore last year. Police Shortfall: Parsons IT HAS never been a secret that the Northern Rivers suffers from a shortage of police resources and an abnormally high rate of stress leave. But now the State Government has officially recognised the problem with the full release of the statewide audit into police resources, conducted by former assistant commissioner Peter Parsons. The long-awaited audit shows that in the Northern Region – from Newcastle to the Queensland border – the Tweed-Byron Local Area Command (LAC) and Richmond LAC occupy the second and third spots for stress leave vacancies, with 15 and 14 empty spots respectively. Richmond LAC was operating with 32 police officers under strength as [...]

Judge Judy Friesfrost denied an early release based on the severity of charges facing the reindeer, choosing to delay arraignment until after the holidays. Reports from the North Pole workshop indicate that Santa may have to postpone gift delivery until his reindeer are released. Facing repeat offender changes this year, all three reindeer had been incarcerated last year on a variety of charges ranging from drunk and disorderly to prostitution. [...]

The announcement came with the release by the government today of 22 recommendations from former Assistant Commissioner Peter Parsons, who has been reviewing issues such as police working conditions and resources for several months. The review has become a touchstone of government MPs responding to calls for increased police resources, including on the Northern Rivers where there have been loud calls for more police from across the region, particularly Casino where residents want a 24-hour police presence. Interrelate’s Julie Leete says “it looks as though we have a lot of services, but the services don’t meet the current demand,” LAST financial year 663 children across northern NSW were removed from their families by the Family and Community Services department. The region has the second largest number of children removed in the state, according to figures obtained by The Northern Star. That took the number of children in the department’s care across the region at the end of June last year to 2950 – again the second highest in the state behind the Hunter/Central Coast region. IT’S World Suicide Prevention Day tomorrow, a day which aims to raise awareness about a cause of death that claims more lives than skin cancer and car accidents. Lifeline Northern Rivers Counselling Centre Manager Niall Mulligan said six people on average take their own lives each day. “That means that each year more people are dying by suicide in Australia than on our roads or from skin cancer,” he said. He said these subjects rated highly on the public agenda but suicide remained a taboo. “That’s why lifeline is looking to break down the stigma associated with suicide,” Around 2200 people take their own lives each year but figures are thought to be 20-30% under reported due to different reporting [...]

Southern Cross University Researcher John Stevens and comedian Mandy Nolan are doing a research project on humour and dementia. IT seems laughter really is the best medicine – even with the most intractable illnesses such as Alzheimer’s. Its benefit to dementia sufferers has gone unrecognised and its full potential is still unknown but Southern Cross University researcher John Stevens wants to change that, with the help of his wife, comedian Mandy Nolan. They have found that groups of elderly people with symptoms of dementia show remarkable improvement during 90-minute workshops in which they role-play, joke, try to improvise and do stand-up routines and above all, laugh at and with each other. The creative process of generating comedy then laughing, was [...]

Facebook has a new page dedicated to stopping Dan Murphy’s from obtaining a license to operate in Byron Bay – Just Say NO to Dan Murphy’s in Byron Bay. https://www.facebook.com/nodanmurphys Dan Murphy’s are planning a massive super store right in the central shopping area of the Woolworths Plaza in Byron Bay. This one liquor outlet will be three times the size of all current bottle shops put together! Byron Bay already has a massive problem with drugs and alcohol, particularly amongst teenagers. One of the leading problems with teens and alcohol is the availability of cheap alcohol. The cheaper it is, the more they are able to consume. Kronic NEW laws banning a synthetic form of cannabis called kronic came into effect last Friday, but police will allow a period of grace before cracking down on suppliers. Richmond Local Area Command crime manager, Detective Inspector Greg Moore, said police must enforce the law, but would give retailers enough time to dispose of the substance. “We will enforce possession from now on but, in fairness to the local traders that might not be aware, we’ve been going around and educating them about the new law,” he said. “Obviously we’re not going to go straight out and jump on people, I know one supplier who had just purchased 13kg of the stuff so we are allowing a certain amount of [...]
