Splendour in the Grass Wrap-up
by Eve Jenkin
Splendour In The Grass 2005’s quality lineup saw the festival sell-out in record time, and whilst the artists’ performances were belted out with precision and enthusiasm, the festival’s setup left something to be desired.
The musical spectacular set amidst the tranquil surroundings of Byron Bay’s Belongil Fields that was promised was a somewhat less enjoyable mud-fest leaving this attendee in particular (and no doubt a host of others) with tired legs from lack of seating and a sore neck from straining to catch a glimpse of the stage.
Some festival-goers prefer to take the laid-back approach to music shindigs rather than get right on in on the action - sitting down on the grass, [...]

Byron Bay tops nation with baby boomers
Byron Bay boasts the highest proportion of baby boomers in the country.
A population growth report completed by KPMG says 27 per cent of Byron Bay’s residents are baby booomers.
The national average is 21 per cent.
The Member for Ballina, Don Page, says a property boom has made it possible for people to live their ideal lifestyle.
“They’re in the happy siutation, probably the first generation ever to be the beneficiaries of a property boom, in Sydney in particular, which gives them the where-with-all to relocate into an area where they can actually continue to maintain a good economic base, but enjoy the quality of life they would now seek as they are getting older,” he said.

MP warns against Commonwealth control of coastal planning
There are concerns that the Tweed coast or Byron Bay in northern NSW could become another Gold Coast if the Federal Government takes over responsibility for coastal planning.
Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell wants a 30-year joint Commonwealth, state and local government plan for managing coastal development.
But the Labor Member for Richmond, Justine Elliot, says the Commonwealth does not have a good track record for protecting the environment.
Ms Elliot, whose seat is based in northern NSW, says the coastline is at risk of becoming overdeveloped.
“We simply cannot trust the Howard Government to protect our coastline against overdevelopment,” Ms Elliot said.
“Make no mistake about it, the Howard Government will try and turn the Tweed and [...]

Byron Bay residents says skate park site unsuitable
The New South Wales Government has funded a skate park for Byron Bay, but has selected a site the community does not want.
A $68,000 grant was announced last week for the Butler Street Reserve skate park.
But the director of the Byron Youth Service, Paul Spooner, says the community believes the site is too isolated.
“The one thing that’s become clear over the years is that skate parks should be very visible,” he said.
“There’s good reasons for that - to maximise their usage and having skate parks in visible locations means that safety issues are well taken care.
Mr Spooner says the Government is not listening to community concerns.
“They’re possibly responding to a a submission that [...]
