Mayor seeks coordinated New Year’s celebrations
Byron Shire Mayor Jan Barham wants a regional approach to New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Her call comes after early indications from the Ballina Shire that it is unlikely to host a party in Lennox Head this year beyond 10:00pm AEST.
Ms Barham, who is the chair of the New Year’s Eve safety committee, says that will have implications for Byron Bay.
She says coordination is essential.
“There will be communication with them and we will try and get a coordinated approach to ensure the safety of everyone involved right throughout the region and for the police particularly who are pressured on that night with the regional activities,” she said.
“They need to be comfortable that it’s manageable.”

Byron Bay

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

Byron Bay is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It is also a grisly reminder of the folly of letting green ideologists run anything.
In the name of conservation and affordable housing the Greens-dominated, cheesecloth-swathed council’s idea of managing development is to make the town as unappealing as possible to the tourists who are its lifeblood. Popularly elected Greens mayor Jan Barham once even proposed a toll on visitors entering town.
The council’s latest crackpot scheme is to ban short-term rentals in residential areas, the bread and butter for every coastal holiday village.
As local author and former journalist Ian Evans says: “Tourism is the only industry in town. We can’t revive the dairy co-op or the whaling station so it’s [...]

Byron council to consider holiday letting
A meeting limited to 25 people will decide how the Byron Shire Council is to proceed on the issue of holiday letting. The current local environmental plan states that holiday letting is illegal in residential areas.
The council is trying to balance the concerns of Byron Bay residents with the economic ambitions of the real estate sector and property investors. A facilitator from Sydney will chair a meeting of stakeholder groups at a meeting in October.
The council’s director of planning, Ray Darney, says he wants the group to put forward options for managing holiday letting.
“We’re going to see if there’s anything that comes forward that is more practicable that may suit the [...]

Aboriginal Filmwriters

Seven indigenous filmmakers are about to mix it with the best.
Guillermo Arriaga, the writer of the Oscar-nominated film 21 Grams, is among a group of US screen workers in Australia for Long Black, an Australian Film Commission program to help indigenous filmmakers develop their first features. “Indigenous stories are original stories [and] we have a hunger for original stories,” Arriaga said at yesterday’s launching. “The stories that the indigenous people of Australia are telling can only happen here, and they can have also some universality.” Arriaga is excited about finding the young filmmakers’ original voice and trying to make it better - and about drawing inspiration from a country he’s long had a crush on: “When I was a kid, [...]

ARTISTS IN ACTION FOR 10th ANNIVERSARY SCULPTURE SHOW
Bringing a light touch to a serious subject, local artists John Dahlsen and Lynne Adams will celebrate environmental awareness at this year’s special Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show. The two artists are among 45 previous award winners invited to participate in the 10th anniversary of the show, which is shaping up to be an impressive event.
John Dahlsen, of Byron Bay, is an international artist who has raised the appeal of recycled art to new levels. His colourful wall panels and totems are entirely assembled from flotsam and jetsam collected from Australian beaches. These objects he meticulously sorts and codes by colour, to make up his unique “artist’s palette”.
His entry in [...]

Michael Hutchence Estate

Late music legend MICHAEL HUTCHENCE died almost penniless - his assets amounted to just the $360 (GBP200) he had in his pocket when he died in 1997..
The family of the INXS frontman have been told by executors of his will that the value of his estate is zero and he had just $572 (GBP317) in his bank account at the time of his death - despite his fortune being estimated at $18 million (GBP10 million).
After the sale of some of his possessions, including guitars, artwork and real estate, and the payment of $650 (GBP361) in legal fees, there was nothing left according to financial advisors left in charge of his finances.
