Byron Bay Surf Club

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

BYRON Bay surf-ski paddler Kurt Tutt, has won bronze at the World Surf Life Saving Titles in Victoria.
The titles, at Lorne Beach, were held in flat conditions. In an awesome series of results over the past few world titles, Tutt has now won two silvers and a bronze in the single ski. Eighteen-year-old fellow Byron Bay Surf Club member Jo Way made the final in the Open Women’s board and finished a creditable eighth. Brodie Moir also attended but missed out by one place on making the final.
Byron Bay’s surf lifesavers’ main training and competing focus is always NSW State and National Titles. They are hoping to take a full team to the coming major titles after having many [...]

Byron Bay wins Rip Curl Kirra

Monday, February 27th, 2006

BYRON BAY’s reputation for breeding some of surfing’s best talent is intact. At the weekend the Byron Bay Boardriders Club defeated all-comers to win the nation’s most prestigious club title — the Rip Curl Kirra Teams Challenge. Boasting prizemoney of $15,000, the teams challenge lured 40 clubs and more than 300 surfers from Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Western Australia and New Zealand.
But the Byron brigade, which included former WCT surfer Kieren Perrow, Beau Walker, Yerin Brown, Jarred Sullivan and Garrett Parkes, had to withstand one of the closest events in the tournament’s history before reigning supreme in solid two-metre peaks at Duranbah. Three teams — Byron Bay, Noosa and Coolum — finished on equal points, with [...]

Plastic Bags

Friday, February 24th, 2006

BYRON Shire’s selfdescribed ‘bag lady’, Dee Tipping, has joined calls to get a plastic bag ban, or levy, back on the national agenda. Ms Tipping began a ‘bring your own shopping bag’ campaign in 2003 with the aim of making Byron Bay free of plastic bags by 2005. She said the campaign initially took off, but had since plateaued and she was now planning to lobby the Federal Government to introduce a policy of a 25cent levy on plastic bags. “Activists can do so much, but government policy is what will make or break the environment,” she said. “People do have the best intentions at heart, but we’re notoriously forgetful. “Some people have 85 of those [...]
