Ben King Surf Respect

Friday, March 24th, 2006

The Byron Bay surfing fraternity came out in numbers to farewell a well loved family man and Byron Bay Boardriders President, Ben King. BBBRC members took an active part in the paddleout in support of the family, wife jenny, Kurt, Maddi and Paris. It was a sendoff not seen before in the Bay, with many surfers travelling from the Gold Coast and interstate to be there. Around 600 surfers paddled out after a short service on the beach, leaving at least another 200 watching from the beach.
The traditional circle and blessing was managed in fine style considering there were such a large number of surfers involved, a credit to the club organisers and the goodwill of those involved. Likewise, [...]

Rex Hunt

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

REX Hunt is refusing to wear the blame for a downturn in tourism at Byron Bay this summer. The fish-kissing celebrity told a Sydney radio station Byron Bay was ‘more dangerous than Bali’ after he was involved in a brawl outside the Beach Hotel last October. The Byron Bay Business Group has received reports from some business owners indicating downturns of 60 per cent. Spokesman Barry Wallace said a ‘conservative’ average loss for the central business district was 15 per cent. Byron Shire mayor Jan Barham has denied sending an ‘anti-tourism’ message to the world and challenged business owners to show her a media report in which she is quoted saying ‘Byron Bay does not want [...]

Herb Elliott

Monday, March 20th, 2006

AUSTRALIAN running legend Herb Elliott has bought a home at Byron Bay. Mr Elliott, along with Australian swimming matriarch Dawn Fraser, is famed among the 1950s generation of Australian athletes and bears the staggering record of going from 1957 to 1961 without losing a single race at 1500m or one mile.
Mr Elliott, born in 1938, debuted two years after the 1956 Melbourne Olympics -— to which he had gone as a spectator —- when he became the youngest athlete to break the four-minute-mile. Before the year was out he had broken the world 1500m record and won two gold medals (in the mile and 880 yard events) at the Cardiff Empire Games. Mr Elliott was honoured for [...]

Surfing Australia pays tribute to Ben King

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

Surfing Australia pays tribute to Ben King. - Great Loss to surfing community in Byron Bay. Surfing Australia wishes to pay its respects to Ben King and publicly acknowledge the outstanding role he has played in laying a solid foundation over the years for the Byron Bay Boardriders and surfing in this region. Ben’s progression from junior competitor to administrator followed a path familiar to many of our large band of volunteers who keep the “engine-room” of Australian surfing thriving. First joining the Byron Seahorse Boardriders Club [BBBRC] in 1978 at 14, he was second in the club junior championship. His competitive surfing career continued as he represented the Club and NSW at National championships, whilst completing his trade [...]

Backpackers

ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT AMENDMENT (ILLEGAL BACKPACKER ACCOMMODATION) BILL
The Hon. IAN COHEN [8.17 p.m.]: I am also pleased to support this bill. As my colleague Lee Rhiannon has said, there are major problems being experienced with illegal backpackers in many communities, including my home community of Byron Bay—a backpacker’s mecca. I commend Mr David Barr for introducing this bill in the other place. It is important for all areas visited by tourists. I certainly do not wish to stop young people from experiencing the joys of travel. I am sure many members of this House travelled overseas in their youth. I certainly travelled for many years and appreciated the accommodation in other countries that was offered by backpacker hostels. On [...]
