For many years Byron Bay has had one of the “greenest” communities in Australia. Consequently a pro environment local council has been returned at the last four elections .In the context of a pro development State Government, the Byron Shire Council has had to innovate means by which it can thwart outside pressures to develop. The will of the local electorate opposes the type of over development that has occurred in neighbouring coastal local government areas, e .g the Gold Coast to north and Ballina to the South.

CAPSICUM spray was used on a teenager at Byron Bay and dozens of car tyres were slashed at Lennox Head as the school holidays got off to a rocky start on the Northern Rivers. Police said cars from Byron Bay, Ballina and Bruns- wick Heads were called to the eastern end of Jonson Street when fights broke out between teenagers from Byron Bay and Tweed Heads outside the Beach Hotel on Friday night. And residents at Lennox Head yesterday woke to find vandals had moved through their streets overnight, slashing the tyres of cars as they went.

The premier sculpture showcase of the Northern Rivers region enters its second decade with an exciting influx of entries by both established artists and gifted young creators. One of the first of its kind in Australia, the Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show has fostered the development of many artists and the public’s appreciation of sculpture, and continues to be strongly sponsored by WHK Rutherfords Financial Advisers.
This year’s summer-long event features around 65 new works from 60 East Coast artists, a number of whom are first-time participants.
