A New South Wales whale researcher says some humpbacks have started their northern migration earlier than usual. Wally Franklin from the Oceania Project says whales have been spotted off Byron Bay, in northern NSW, and should now have started making their way around the eastern side of Fraser Island off south-east Queensland. Mr Franklin says he does not think there is any reason why some whales have started the journey early.
“There haven’t been many reports since, so I don’t think it indicates any general change in the migration, but I would expect from here on in to begin getting regular reports and of course June and July is the peak of the migration, so there’ll be plenty flowing up into [...]
