Byron Bay High School Surfers
Surf’s up for subject, school rules
The principal of Byron Bay High School in northern New South Wales has defended a surfing subject that counts towards the Higher School Certificate (HSC). New South Wales Education Minister Carmel Tebutt says she is concerned about the Board of Studies’ decision to approve surfing as an HSC subject. School principal Barry Miller says it prepares students for work in the surfing industry.
“You can look at the marketing, the board shaping, that would basically give our students the skills to set themselves up in employment and jobs that are highly well-paid in a multi, multi-million dollar industry,” he said. The New South Wales Board of Studies says surfing meets the requirements for an HSC subject because it focuses on job opportunities and developing skills. The board’s president, Gordon Stanley, says the subject meets the criteria.
“It isn’t a ‘mickey mouse’ course,” he said. “It’s a course which covers a range of skills which are important for employment in the surfing industry. “And of course that employment might range from promotion through to building and developing surfboards.”
