Bed and Breakfast

Retirement is usually the time for selling off properties that are too big to maintain. But some people see it as a time for transforming their homes into a livelihood.

Australian Barbara Turner bought a run-down bungalow a short walk from Clarks Beach and the town centre in Byron Bay for A$189,000 (£79,000) in a snap decision during a week-long vacation in 1989. She had intended to live there on her own in semi-retirement writing books about muscular dystrophy, which both her children have. But after renovating the property and relocating from Sydney, she found herself playing host to a constant stream of friends and family. There were so many, Turner set up a cooking rota. But soon she came up with a better solution: converting her large home into a bed and breakfast.
