North coast jobless figures not so good

Latest figures from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations paint a grim picture of unemployment on the NSW north coast. The Hunter and north coast labour market region was one of the star performers of the national job market in the year to December 2005, with joblessness falling from 7.7 per cent to 6.9 per cent. But a closer examination reveals that the jobs growth was overwhelmingly in the Newcastle and Hunter areas.

Every local government area on the north coast recorded an increase in unemployment. Joblessness remains highest in the Nambucca and Byron Bay areas. Kempsey and parts of the former Pristine Waters Shire also have double digit unemployment rates.
