Byron Bay Arts and Industry Estate

New space for performing arts

It once used to house scuba gear and other watersports equipment. But now the cavernous original Cape Byron Imports warehouse at the Byron Bay Arts and Industry Estate is about to become the town’s newest, multi-purpose entertainment venue. The project is the brainchild of CBI owner, Rick Hultgren and his talented family. After CBI moved into bigger premises on the estate a few years ago, Rick began making plans to adapt the empty warehouse to foster the local arts scene. And now those plans are coming to fruition.

Making use of the all-weather space is Rick’s daughter, Belinda, who has brought her Quasar-Circus Arts business from Sydney and Belinda’s twin sister, Amanda and her partner Trevor Meagher will run a cafe at the venue. Mum, Gayle, who writes and produces theatre with the Byron Bay High School Musical Committee and is president of the Baywrite Theatre Group, will launch the venue on May 1 with the opening of an exhibition of her paintings of marine life. Other family members who will feature in upcoming events are the Space Cowboy, who has performed to sell-out crowds at the Byron Bay Community, dancer Donna and trapeze artist, Eve.
