STATE Emergency Service crews are on flood watch expecting heavy showers to swell the Orara and Bellinger rivers.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a statement warning that a low pressure trough off the NSW north coast is deepening in response to an upper level trough approaching from the west.

Clarence Nambucca SES commanders have been told that scattered showers tending to widespread rain are expected throughout Tuesday.

The bureau says there is also the possibility of local heavy falls on the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers.

“At this stage there is a greater than 70% chance of minor to moderate main river flooding as well as local flash flooding developing in the Bellinger and Orara valley.

“This flood watch means that people living or working along rivers and streams must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop.

Flood warnings will be issued if minor flood level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service.

Across NSW, about 75% of flood watches are followed by flooding.
