Fukishima: Made in Australia! Stop Uranium Mining!

LIZARDS REVENGE – 5 DAY FESTIVAL 14-18 JULY 2012

Lizards Revenge is excited to bring their 5 day festival to Roxby Downs, to protest at the door of potentially the world’s biggest uranium mine. The festival will include an amazing line up of musicians and artists from around Australia, as well as a solar powered sound system, wind powered cinema, mobile artworks and a very serious message from the 14-18th of July.

The festival includes a great line up of music for all ages; hip-hop, dub, reggae, electro, folk, punk, rock and world music. The event will be powered by solar and wind, demonstrating the viable alternatives to nuclear power.

The 5 day event promises to be inspiring and fun but there is also a very serious side to the event. With the disaster in Fukushima still effecting Japanese citizens, an international legacy of nuclear waste unaddressed, expansion of uranium mining industry in Australia would be a deadly investment suffered by generations to come.

The plan to expand Olympic Dam to an open cut mine, the size of Adelaide City, is unacceptable to the majority of Australian citizens. BHP have failed to address community or international concerns over the safety of the nuclear industry. The legacy of nuclear waste and the threat of expanding nuclear weapon programs is an issue not just for Australians, but the world.

The recent Australian Government decision to export uranium to India is contrary to their commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NTP), an international agreement to halt the expansion of nuclear weapons manufacturing. The Australian Government’s move to send uranium to India undermines the most important agreement on nuclear weapons in the world.

Organisers anticipate that the police will be on their best behavior, and we hope their presence will be minimal and peaceful. The actions of police at the protest against the Beverly mine in 2000 cost the state of South Australia over $2 million with the Supreme court ruling in favor of activists.

The Lizards Revenge is named from an Indigenous dreamtime story of a sleeping lizard, who is said to be in the ground at the site of the uranium mine. This legendary lizard lies sleeping and has in its belly yellow poison. It should not be woken.

HISTORY OF ROXBY DOWNS

Kalta

Sleeping underneath the ground, there is an old lizard known as Kalta the sleepy lizard. The lizard ain’t so sleepy anymore.

BHP Billiton is mining right into that Lizard’s body.

The Federal Government approved the expansion of the Olympic Dam uranium mine in Roxby Downs in October 2011, to make it the biggest uranium mine in the world.

Kalta is angry and wants revenge. Arabunna elder Kevin Buzzacott is calling the people of the world to help the lizard shut down the mine. He is calling for people to come and heal the land in the name of peace and justice for the next 10,000 generations to come.

The land is being irreversibly poisoned in and around Roxby Downs.  The tailings dam is causing dust and ground water contamination and contamination of its own workers.

The uranium is taken all over the world and used to kill the land and all its creatures. It’s destroying lives not only in Fukushima with the reactor meltdown, but in the depleted uranium shells that children play with in the streets of Iraq and Kosovo.

With the Governments numerous attempts to put a nuclear waste dump at Muckaty in the Northern Territory.  There is also the danger, that radioactive waste will be brought back and opening Australia up to accepting nuclear waste from all over the world. Lets stop the deadly chain where it starts.

The land the lizard and the creatures of this earth are summoning everybody who cares about the future of this country. To the gates of the Olympic Dam mine at Roxby Downs in South Australia.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON THE EVENT – THE LIZARDS REVENGE

A camp will be set up from the 7th of July  for people to gather and get creative and informed about the issues and the land, and build a giant lizard. This camp will be situated north of Roxby on Oonadatta track at the Burnout party site Alberrie creek station. See map

From this site we can convoy to Olympic Dam mine. People coming from the south who don’t have time to go up the Borefield rd,  meet at the gates of Olympic Dam mine on the 14th.

We will be releasing a camp site a few days before the event, so if people are getting there pre the 14th, we can convoy to the gates on the 14th. People that would like to camp somewhere other than the blockade can remain at the camp or camp anywhere in the beautiful surroundings.

So come prepared with things you might need to make that action. Paint a banner, write a song, pray, chain your self to a piece of mining equipment, fly a space ship into the mine lease, jump out and start planting trees. What ever it is, it takes many varieties of action to defeat this monster so show us what you got. Non Violent Action styley, legal advice available.

Day 4 & beyond (Tuesday)

We can collectively decide if we want/can maintain a blockade of the mine. We want people to feel safe & comfortable with their action statements, if it is supported by the group, we will aim to maintain a camp – we will provide food, shelter, training, legal advice for people to stay as long as the camp is functional & serving the purpose to blockade the mine

The Desert liberation front will provide 2 meals a day for people at the camp, we ask people to bring only what they need, as you are required to take home what you bring, e.g rubbish

Snacks & extra food – We will provide 2 meals a day, but you may require more, also coffee & tea plus a billy to boil it in or a camp stove. Bring your own cups, cutlery & plates/bowl

WATER – We will have water for kitchen crew & emergency, but we arn’t able to provide everyone with water at the camp. It’s best to fill 20L water container & bring from home – There is water at Roxby Downs, but this water comes from the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) It is saline, so you may prefer water from home & the GAB is already being overused by the town of Roxby Downs & BHP Billiton.
