Byron Bay Land For Sale
RailCorp plans Byron Bay land sale
The state’s rail authority has plans to sell-off some of its land in the centre of Byron Bay.
It is asking Byron Shire Council to rezone land around the Railway Hotel for commercial and retail use.
RailCorp also wants to have land near the Byron Market area zoned residential and land in Mullumbimby zoned commercial.
Byron Shire general manager Pam Westing says the move by the rail authority was prompted by the council’s latest planning changes.
She says the council is not satisfied with RailCorp’s Byron plans.
“It does need a bit more investigation before it’s rezoned to an alternate use, so at this stage we’re not actually proposing to rezone the land, we think it needs more investigation before it’s signed to an alternate zone,” she said.
“If it is a commercial zone obviously that would have impacts on things like traffic and parking and all those sorts of issues and they really haven’t been investigated with respect to those sites in Byron Bay.”
The licensee of the Railway Hotel for the past 25 years, Tom Mooney, says he hopes the state and local governments consider the heritage value of the area around the hotel in any future plans.
“I have no idea what the future is, I’m sure that State Rail, RailCorp, the State Government, even our local government will acknowledge the very important social and cultural area of Byron Bay, this historical precinct with the station master’s cottage, the station,” he said.
“It’s one of the few open spaces in the centre of any coastal town, it’s very important to the Byron Bay population.”
