AS RECENTLY as a few weeks ago, Margaret Olley was still discussing the planned new gallery that would – one day – bear her name. Former Lismore Regional Gallery director Steven Alderton, who was heavily involved in the initial planning of the new gallery in Lismore, met with Ms Olley to discuss the gallery after she heard the project had stalled because of financial concerns in council. Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell said she asked Mr Alderton, who became friends with Ms Olley while he worked at Lismore, to tell the revered painter she hadn’t given up. “I asked him to tell her [...]

We invite you to join us for an exciting panel with four of our beloved women artists who will discuss the inspiration and processes held in their subconscious and what they draw on to create their multi-layered masterpieces. TOURIST towns are a ‘honeypot of commercial activity that provide the opportunity for multiple criminal activities,’ Byron mayor Jan Barham has said after an intense week of crime at Byron Bay. “That’s the experience around the world,” she said. “Because of their transient nature, tourist towns are traditionally seen as ripe for that type of activity.” Cr Barham’s comments come after a series of daring robberies were carried out at Byron Bay this week. The latest was the ram-raid of a chemist in the early hours of yesterday morning. Senior Constable Tony Rose, from Byron Bay police, said thieves drove a dark coloured ute through the glass doors of the Byron West Sunrise Pharmacy about 2am. The Land and Environment Court will now decide if a trial Splendour in the Grass event will go ahead next year at the festival-owned North Byron Shire Parklands at Yelgun, a decision that has led to a sharp response from Byron Shire Council’s general manager Graeme Faulkner. Splendour promoters said that with the council unable to say when a decision would be made on the development application (DA) for the trial event, they had reluctantly decided to lodge an appeal with the court. Mat Morris, the general manager of North Byron Shire Parklands, said the decision had to be made because time was running out to undertake the necessary site works to allow the event to be staged. THE Byron Bay Writers Festival is in jeopardy because of controversial plans by the State Government to cut funding to regional writers’ centres. Arts NSW has announced that funds of $55,000 per year to the Northern Rivers Writers Centre is under review and may cease. Festival director Jeni Caffin said Northern Rivers Writers Centre members were alarmed by the news, which would not only affect programs run by the centre, but could result in the 2009 Byron Bay Writers Festival being savagely scaled back. “It means fewer writers, substantially fewer writers and higher costs to audience members,” Ms Caffin said. The festival, which has grown to become one of the highlights of the Northern Rivers cultural calendar, will this year [...]

Scientists fear flooding could affect dolphin population. Marine scientists are concerned how the dolphin population on the New South Wales north coast will cope with the impact of the floods. They are concerned that the dirty water and contaminated fish will impact on the dolphins and their calving season. Dr Liz Hawkins, a scientist with the Southern Cross University Whale Research Centre, says the region has one of the biggest populations of bottlenose dolphins. “The population out there at the moment is one of the largest recorded to date,” she said. “We’ve got a very big population out there, but we have a lot of dolphins moving in and out, so they’re not here all year round. “My estimates indicate [...]
