To clarify for the community [...]

Byron Bay’s Main Beach was crowded with revellers at the strike of midnight. Revellers pack Byron beaches THE crowds returned to Byron Bay’s New Year’s Eve celebrations on Saturday, with about 10,000 revellers packing into the area to see in the new year. Police reported well-behaved crowds but said the sheer number of people kept officers, St John Ambulance volunteers and surf lifeguards busy. After several low-key years with no entertainment, this year the chamber of commerce, Byron United, organised a band and a fireworks display. The plan coincided with the increased influx and barely a patch of beach could be seen for the sea of people crammed onto Main Beach. Mobile phone networks also crashed. By the strike of [...]

VOLUNTEERS and funds are needed to care for the alarming number of sea turtles washing up on North Coast beaches. It is believed the turtles are becoming ill as a result of the destruction of food sources caused by Cyclone Yasi and the high level of plastic pollution in our oceans. “We have seen nothing like this since we began rescuing sea turtles in 1998,” Australian Seabird Rescue North Coast co-ordinator Kath Southwell said. “We are receiving twice as many stranded turtles [...]

A scene from Schoolies 2009 at Main Beach, Byron Bay. The area is expecting 10,000 teenagers. IN A FEW days as many as 10,000 schoolies will descend on Byron Bay to celebrate finishing year 12. In an effort to keep the teens safe, the Byron Schoolies Hub will be open from this Friday and will remain open 24 hours a day for 18 days. Hub co-ordinator Nicqui Yazdi estimated half the schoolies who came to Byron were under the age of 18. Because they were unable to get into clubs and pubs many of them ended up drinking on beaches and in parks, Ms Yazdi said. Police will have a high presence in Byron during schoolies and will set up [...]

Marc Stapelberg ENGLAND may be gearing up for a royal wedding, but on the Northern Rivers there is to be a union of two beloved institutions that will be a sparkling pageant in its own right. Red Cross volunteers trained in emergency services (from left) Amanda Lucantonio, Tracee Thomson, Tweed-Byron emergency services liaison officer Kodie Alderton and Byron Bay team leader Bronwyn Raphael. We’ve all seen the tragic images. Buildings in ruins. Lives lost. Byron Shire locals have looked on in disbelief – as have people around the world – at the devastation following the earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. Not that long before, Australia as a nation held its collective breath as Cyclone Yasi ripped through Far North Queensland, we shook our heads as bushfires destroyed homes in Perth, and could hardly believe the inland tsunami which swept through Toowoomba and the Lockyer Valley. And, in each natural disaster, there is a common feeling in [...]

FUNDING has ceased for a service helping youth in at-risk situations on Friday and Saturday nights in Ballina. The Ballina District Community Services Association (BDCSA), which has been operating the Street Beat program for 12 years, is appealing for community support to get the Street Beat service back on the road. BDCSA executive officer, Dianna Howell, said State Government funding for the service stopped in September because of a change in funding criteria. The BDCSA then funded the service for another month. “Despite four separate applications for State and private funding, none of which has yet been successful, BDCSA lacks the financial resources to support the program on an on-going basis,” Ms Howell said. The BDCSA has requested State funding [...]

While the Byron Bay Writers Festival looms on the literary horizon, festival director Jeni Caffin has acknowledged that it couldn’t run as smoothly as it does without the army of volunteers that help each year. “It truly is the volunteers who make the event possible,” she said. “You’ll find them across every aspect of the festival – we’re indebted to their generosity and enthusiasm.” Ms Caffin went as far as saying that the volunteers were the ones that created an inclusive and inviting atmosphere. Ralph Moore has been volunteering at the writers festival for eight years and obviously enjoys it. “We’re like this big family that gets together once a year and throws a big party and everyone’s invited,” Mr Moore said. “And we have [...]
